The Lone Bellow released its third record, “Walk Into A Storm,” in September. Evidently the band faced its share of rough weather leading up to the album — with personal struggles and personal transformations weighing on their emotions.
The trio has a rootsy sound that veers towards gospel, towards rock, or towards country, depending on the song. The music is about change, healing and endurance, with the trio moving from Brooklyn to Nashville prior to recording the record, though all three of the members grew up in the South. They evoke Fleetwood Mac, the Band, Paul Simon, Ray LaMontagne and even a little of The War On Drugs or the Drive-By Truckers at times.
There is a darkness that remains to this music though, and that might be what makes these songs about struggle and hope seem realistic, inspirational and meaningful: They’re not blaring blasts of relentless cloudless sunshine. If you can relate to the idea that life is hard, but life is also awesome, and to music that expresses that, the Lone Bellow will resonate with you.
