The Killers are the perfect Las Vegas band, with sin, redemption and a certain flash all coming together in big catchy pop songs that hint at a tragic heart.

They’ve hauled the best bits from elsewhere — the drive of U2, the tunes of the Kinks, the anthemic swagger of Queen, the mix of emotion and ennui of the Psychedelic Furs — and brought them to a sun-baked desert. They’re very American in that way: If they need to blend some gospel or some Roy Orbison-esque yearning with their new-wave revival, they will.

In the process frontman Brandon Flowers and his band have created epic 21st-century radio rock, with enough twitchy menace and vulnerability to appeal to those who seek candor and the suggestion of rawness with their hooks. The band has been working on its fifth studio album, with fans hoping to see its release — but with no official confirmation — between fall of this year and late 2017.

There is the chance that the band will be test-driving new material from the next album when they play Connecticut. Fans might get lucky when they play Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville, Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $54.50 to $70. 860-226-7711 and mohegansun.com.
