It’s hard to believe that there are new frontiers of self-revelation and candor for today’s pop stars, given that celebrity culture is now so much about exposing parts of one’s life, either as a function of the work that an artist does, or in the process of promoting that work and allowing the public to feel they’ve glimpsed behind the curtain and past the scripted persona of artifice. And yet singer Katy Perry pushed to unexplored regions of oversharing (in the interest of public health, of course) this summer when she live-streamed four days of life, including an emotional therapy session.

It was all part of the rollout of “Witness,” Perry’s new record, her fourth major-label release.

Perry was a vocal Hillary Clinton supporter. She’s had numerous high-profile relationships and flaps. She’s has been forthcoming about her conservative religious upbringing and how her career has caused rifts with her family over the years, and her performing style is one of festive and technicolor near-nakedness in every sense.

“I’m just looking for a witness to get me through this,” she sings on the title track of the new record. “We all want to be seen.”

Perry, who is on a pop diva level with Beyonce, Madonna, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, seems to be signaling an interest in moving beyond her bubbly buoyant pop confections of the past, to excavate some sort of truth and authenticity beneath it all. The problem is, once one builds up the veneer, the relentless reinvention can become baked into the stagecraft. Regardless, pop consumers are adept at pondering these complexities or ignoring them and just enjoying the music.

Katy Perry will be at Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville, on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. $99.50 to $499.50. 860-226-7711 and mohegansun.com.
