Jeff Beck is a guitar hero, often put on the same pedestal as six-string giants (and fellow Yardbirds) Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

Beck veered away from the blues rock that launched his career, into more prog-jazz fusion realms. His singing tone and hypnotic sustain were always unmistakable. Beck’s playing can go from lyrical to dive-bombing with extravagant bends and hammer-ons.

Beck has a new record, “Loud Hailer,” out this month, which finds him sounding a lot like Hendrix, complete with screaming wahs. The blues form still guides his songwriting, even if his playing takes off into appropriately showboaty places from there. Elsewhere, the textures get thick and smeared to grimy effect. Vocalist Rosie Bones gives the record a pleasantly dark, council-flat attitude.

Jeff Beck performs at the Grand Theater at Foxwoods, 350 Trolley Line Blvd., Mashantucket, Friday, July 22, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 to $75. Information: foxwoods.com.
