When a recent Democratic presidential debate sparked a Twitter meme on the subject of “if we’re going to discuss the ’90s … ,” social-media wits dredged up obscure elements of the grunge decade for comic effect.

Why not talk about G Love and Special Sauce? Theirs was a sound that delved into gritty old funk before that became the go-to stylistic foraging ground for every type of pop star. G Love and Special Sauce were somewhere between the Beastie Boys and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, fusing hip-hop and funk and raw electric blues, or something like a more retro and less overtly testosterone-y iteration of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Like any good funk, G Love and Special Sauce have executed some stops and starts to their careers over the years — taking pauses, working on side and solo projects, etc — but they’re back at it together. G Love and Special Sauce play at the Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den in Uncasville, Saturday, March 19, at 8 p.m. Free. mohegansun.com.
