French Montana raps a lot about weed and cocaine. And also about not worrying about anything.

The rapper is often in the tabloids for a variety of reasons — beefs with other rappers, notable girlfriends, fashion choices, and for his fondness for exotic pets. He was born in Morocco, and so he speaks French and Arabic as well as English, which one might assume would aid in his syllable-slinging.

Pulling samples and riffs from older hip-hop, contemporary British soul, and classic rock (his recent mixtape opens with a reworking of a Bad Company song), French Montana is a fertile collaborator, working with Future, Kanye West, Nas, Travis Scott, Big Sean, ASAP Rocky, Puff Daddy, Jadakiss and Chinx on his latest. He also repurposes a Jackson 5 tune, speeding it up Chipmunks-style and rapping about getting high and real estate. The mixtape will have to hold fans over as they await the release of French Montana’s “Mac & Cheese: The Album.”

French Montana plays Toad’s Place, 300 York St., New Haven, Tuesday, May 17, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $60. 203-624-8623, toadsplace.com.
