DJ Logic has been manning the turntables in some very eclectic settings for years. His work includes pairing up with jam bands and improvisers, working as a DJ with a pioneering Black Rock Coalition band in the ’90s, collaborating with jazz bassist Christian McBride and working on projects that involved downtown New York artists like Marc Ribot and the Master Musicians of Jajouka from Morocco, or the Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars.

Logic’s logic is wide-ranging, drawing on dense jazz harmonies or complex rhythms of the African diaspora. The collage aesthetic is central to hip-hop, taking pre-existing material and recontextualizing it. Source material gets spun on its head, accents get wedged in place. A horn snippet is transformed into a rhythmic background, crafting patterns out of moments. With the wealth of recorded music now more accessible than ever, it makes sense for turntable artists like DJ Logic to dig deep and branch out beyond the funk-soul-jazz-rock-pop territory.

DJ Logic will perform at the Arch Street Tavern, 85 Arch St., Hartford, Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7 to $10. 860-246-7610 or archstreettavern.com.
