Being in the Byrds and also being in Crosby, Still, Nash and Young is a pretty nifty hat trick. David Crosby has claims to fame in every direction. Add to that his role in discovering and producing Joni Mitchell, and Crosby could pretty much sit back and relax on his expansive legend.

But he also made a solo debut of his own, 1971’s “If I Could Only Remember My Name,” which has turned into an icon of beautiful-wasted come-down music. Listen to “Laughing,” “Cowboy Movie” or “Traction in the Rain” from that record to get a sense of how he captured the dark, self-destructive underbelly of the whole post-hippie hangover. That Crosby survived the excess is a miracle of physical fortitude or weird luck. He’s still at it. You can follow Crosby’s frequently outrageous outbursts on Twitter, where he is remarkably engaged and generous with his responses to admirers, and where he also routinely offends fans of Kanye West and Phish, or sometimes kicks sand at his longtime collaborators like Neil Young and Graham Nash.

Or you can just listen to his music. He released a new record, “Lighthouse,” this year, which is stately and showcases his still considerable acoustic-guitar skills and his ability to take folk in unexpected jazzy directions or into airy, super-chill realms.

David Crosby performs at Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 East Ridge, Ridgefield, Saturday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $126. 203-438-5795, ridgefieldplayhouse.org.
