Hartford’s Curtis Brothers — Luques on bass, and Zaccai on piano — helped solidify their understanding of jazz tradition and improvisation at the Artists Collective.

The pair’s 2012 record “Completion of Proof” is a demonstration of roots fundamentals. It’s a bluesy hard-bop workout, with lots of propulsive energy and soulful playing. The record is a statement of conservation-minded principles, a salute to jazz tradition, a hat-tip to how swing, bebop and a sense of history can still serve as launch pads for creative exploration. It’s not a bad thing if your band can sound like Horace Silver or the Jazz Messengers.

The Curtis Brothers Quartet, with fellow Hartfordite Orice Jenkins as opener, will play at Infinity Hall, 2 Front St., Hartford, Sunday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. $24 to $34. Information: 866-666-6306 and infinityhall.com.
