Any discussion of greatest-ever jazz bassists would have to include Ron Carter, who shared stages in the early 1960s with Eric Dolphy, Jaki Byard, Wes Montgomery and Cannonball Adderly before anchoring Miles Davis’ second great quintet (Davis, Carter, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Tony Williams) between 1963-68. His remarkable post-Davis career has included countless recordings (listen to his 1988 recording of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites, if you get a chance), film scores, Grammy wins, method books and teaching gigs. Carter’s trio with guitarist Russell Malone and pianist Donald Vega arrives at Yale’s Morse Recital Hall on Oct. 24.

RON CARTER TRIO performs on Friday, Oct. 24 at Yale University’s Morse Recital Hall in New Haven. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10-$20. Information: yale.edu.
