For more than two decades, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane — the son of jazz legends John and Alice Coltrane — has been turning in memorable performances for other leaders (Elvin Jones, Steve Coleman, and most recently Coltrane’s cousin Steven Ellison, who performs experimental electronica as Flying Lotus), while leading groups of his own. After releasing the critically acclaimed “Spirit Fiction” in 2012, Coltrane broke up his longtime quartet in favor of a new one with pianist David Virelles, bassist (and Hartford native) Dezron Douglas and drummer Johnathan Blake. Coltrane’s group performs in Yale University’s Sprague Hall in New Haven on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m.
