Neutral Milk Hotel, which started life as an experimental Jeff Mangum recording project, doesn't need to record another new song, ever, and they'll still sell out shows.
"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," Mangum's 1998 magnum opus, combined sounds we've heard — acoustic guitars, musical saws, accordians, percussion and what-have-you — in bizarre and surprising ways, in service to his otherworldly voice and surreal imagery. "Aeroplane" sold few copies before Mangum's nervous breakdown and early exit from touring and recording, but it's probably going to outlive us all. Mangum reunited the "Aeroplane" players — Scott Spillane, Jeremy Barnes and Julian Koster — in 2013, which allows us to hear those extraordinary songs live. Tickets are $35 to $40.
NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL performs on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Klein in Bridgeport. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 to $40. Information: theklein.org.
