This summer, Grammy-nominated pianist Manuel Valera’s New Cuban Express, a dynamic sextet, filled Hartford’s Bushnell Park with progressive Afro-Cuban music. At New Haven’s Firehouse 12 on Friday, Valera splits that sound roughly in half, retaining bassist Hans Glawischnig and adding drummer E.J. Strickland, for an intimate evening that’s being recorded for an upcoming CD release. The first set starts at 8:30 p.m.
