There is a place where high-concept drone metal overlaps with cerebral minimalist classical music. Patterns emerge in what appears like stasis. Ear-numbing volume starts to transmit deep hypnotic effects. Glacial tempos turn into endurance tests. And nuclear textures take on a physicality that is hard to explain. And sometimes pyrotechnic displays of virtuosity erupt out of the fog.

Japanese sludge masters Boris will explore the legal limits of decibel abuse when the band plays in Hamden. It’s not all the speed of lava, Boris can kick into spastic bombastic overdrive; the band has a gong and double-necked guitars and it’s not afraid to use them.

Boris released its first studio album 20 years ago. This tour celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the release of the band’s landmark record “Pink.” Also on the bill is the band Earth, mystic-minded explorers of flat-lined tempos and the pleasures that exist there. If you understand the connection between deep-breathing and avant-metal, you’ll be at this show, with ear plugs.

Boris plays the Ballroom at the Outer Space, 295 Treadwell St., Hamden, Sunday, Aug. 7, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25. Information: 203-288-6400, thespacect.com. (This show was moved from the College Street Music Hall.)
