Active since the early 1990s, the Alloy Orchestra has found new musical methods to help contemporary audiences appreciate the glories of century-old silent films.

The trio, overseen by percussionist/clarinetist Ken Winokur and featuring accordionist Terry Donahue and keyboardist Roger C. Miller (yes, the famed co-founder of Mission of Burma and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic), creates soundscapes that bring fresh energy and urgency to such silent classics as “Metropolis,” “Son of the Sheik” and “He Who Gets Slapped.”

On Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in Yale’s Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St., New Haven, the Alloy Orchestra performs its live original soundtrack to the singular 1929 Russian avant-garde documentary “Man With a Movie Camera.” The film has been in the Alloy repertoire for 20 years, but this performance will feature a crisp new digitally restored print. Admission is free. 203-432-0670, whc.yale.edu
