Jim Carrey has found a love interest for his new dark comedy, but the identity of that on-screen romance will surprise some viewers.
According to Variety, Ewan McGregor will appear opposite Carrey in "I Love You Phillip Morris," an independently produced film that marks the directing debut of screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.
Carrey will play Steven Russell, a frequently imprisoned con man with a genius IQ and a rather unusual personal life. Married and a father, Russell was doing a stint in jail for insurance fraud when he fell in love with his prison cell mate, Phillip Morris (McGregor). Russell is notorious for both the scope of his cons and his repeated successful (at least temporarily) prison escapes.
The script, by Ficarra and Requa, is based on the book by Steve McVicker, a crime reporter with the Houston Chronicle.
With Carrey currently finishing Robert Zemeckis' motion capture "Christmas Carol," production on "Phillip Morris" will begin in the spring.
Last seen (by somebody we're sure) in "Miss Potter" and "Stormbreaker," McGregor has Woody Allen's "Cassandra's Dream" opening in limited release later this month.
