If a vote were held to name the weepiest weepie ever made, there’s a good chance “Stella Dallas” would win the honors.

The 1937 Barbara Stanwyck drama tells the story of Stella, a working-class divorcee who dotes on her pretty daughter Laurel (Anne Shirley). Stella wants Laurel to have all the advantages in life, but the sacrifice Stella must make to give them to her is emotionally shattering.

Buy a box of Kleenex and head out to Criterion Cinemas, 86 Temple St. in New Haven, to see the film on Saturday and Sunday, April 11 and 12, at 11:30 a.m. It is part of the theater’s “Movies and Mimosas” series.

Admission is $5. Mimosas, which could make anyone cry even harder, cost extra.
