Avon Theatre in Stamford presents a three-part series, “Humor and God, Passion and Humility: Religious Hope from the Movies,” with screenings of diverse films “that present God in ways that engage the stresses of life with humor, passion and serenity,” this summer.

The films are followed by discussions by the Rev. Paul Zahl of Mockingbird Ministries.

The series begins Wednesday, June 22, with “Barcelona,” the 1994 Mira Sorvino drama about two American expatriates living in Spain in the 1980s. The story touches on the power of prayer, and the film includes a send-up of Protestantism.

“The Pawnbroker” follows on Wednesday, July 27. The 1964 Rod Steiger drama focuses on a Holocaust survivor who loses faith in his fellow man.

The series closes Wednesday, Aug. 24, with “Stars in My Crown.” The 1950 Joel McCrea drama tells the story of a frontiersman who is also a parson who must confront the Ku Klux Klan.
