James Baldwin is an icon of the Civil Rights movement, and a film screening at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art pays homage to him.

“James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket” has no narration but has Baldwin speaking on subjects that meant a lot to him, whether they be on his impoverished childhood his racial activism or his homosexuality. Karen Thorsen’s 1989 documentary was produced by cinema verita pioneer Albert Maysles. It also features Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, William Styron and other notables.

It will be shown Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. Admission is free and includes a popcorn and soda.

After the movie, a panel discussion will be held with Shawn Salvant, associate professor of English and Africana Studies at UConn; and Barbara Krauthamer, associate professor of history and graduate program director at UMass. The screening is being held in collaboration with the James Baldwin Project, The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Greater Hartford Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc. thewadsworth.org.
