University of Pittsburgh professor Marcus Rediker, author “The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom,” will bring a documentary based on his book to Hartford and New Haven for two screenings this month.

“Ghosts of Amistad: In the Footsteps of the Rebels” chronicles a 2013 journey to Sierra Leone, where Rediker interviewed elders about the 1839 Amistad rebellions and searched for the ruins of the barracoons where the Amistad captives were held prior to their voyage.

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, Connecticut’s Old State House, 800 Main St. in Hartford, will screen the film in its courtroom, the same room in which the Amistad captives made their first court appearance. Rediker will do a Q&A after.Showtime is 7 p.m. ctoldstatehouse.org.

Another free screening, with Rediker present, will be at New Haven Museum, 114 Whitney Ave., on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. newhavenmuseum.org.
