Sergei Eisenstein is a cinematic legend, the director of such Soviet silent classics as “Strike,” “Battleship Potemkin” and “October (Ten Days That Shook the World).” He’s a Russian cultural icon, but the new film about him, “Eisenstein in Guanajuato,” provoked great debate and anger in his home country.

Peter Greenaway’s speculative biopic tells a story about Eisenstein’s visit to Mexico and a homosexual affair he has with his Mexican guide. In typical Greenaway fashion, the sexuality is graphic.

“Eisenstein in Guanajuato” is the latest in Cinestudio’s monthly Second Thursday series of films with LGBT themes. It will be shown Thursday, Aug. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the cinema on the campus of Trinity College in Hartford. Admission is $9, $7 seniors and students. cinestudio.org.
