The documentary “Healing Voices” is meant to start a worldwide conversation. It tells the stories of people with mental illness as they work to make their lives purposeful.

Instead of showing in theaters, the movie is being released in local gathering places all around the United States, England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand, to foster a sense of community and to encourage dialogue about the issues. Locally, the movie will be shown free at these locations:

>>Friday, April 29, at 5 p.m. at Yale Davies Auditorium in New Haven; at 6:30 p.m. Founders Hall Auditorium at Winsted Community College in Winsted; and at 7 p.m. at Wilde Auditorium, University of Hartford in West Hartford.

>>Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. at Ferguson Library in Stamford.

>>Monday, May 2, at 3 p.m. at the Bridgeport Public Library, Newfield Branch.

>>Wednesday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Norwalk Hospital in the Perkin Auditorium.
