‘The Handmaid’s Tale,” the Hulu drama based on the 1985 dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, is one of the country’s hottest TV series. Many have forgotten that Atwood’s novel had been made into a movie long before the TV show made its debut.
“The Handmaid’s Tale,” from 1990, tells the story of Kate/Offred (Natasha Richardson), a handmaid forced into fertility slavery in a fascist America of the future, renamed Gilead. Her employer, The Commander, is portrayed by Robert Duvall, his unhappy wife Serena Joy by Faye Dunaway and Offred’s friend Moira by Elizabeth McGovern of “Downton Abbey.”
The drama, whose screenplay was adapted by playwright Harold Pinter, will be shown Thursday, Aug. 2, at 1:30 p.m. at Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road. Admission is free.
