Wesleyan University’s annual “Hollywood Icons” summertime free film series begins this week, with a monthlong focus on the great Bette Davis.
All films are shown on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Film Studies, 301 Washington Terrace, on the university campus in Middletown. Marc Longenecker, an assistant professor of the practice in film studies, will introduce each film.
In addition, an exhibit in the adjacent Rick Nicita gallery can be seen all summer. “Be Afraid … Be Very Afraid … The Cinema of Horror” features posters from classic thriller movies. The gallery is open until 7:30 p.m., just before the film screening.
Here’s the lineup:
July 10: “All About Eve,” the 1950 drama about a Broadway legend and a hanger-on who is more devious than she seems.
July 17: “Now, Voyager,” the 1942 romantic drama about an under-confident woman who goes into therapy and gains self-esteem and poise.
July 24: “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” the 1962 horror about a former child star and her paraplegic sister, who live together in a falling-apart mansion.
July 31: “June Bride,” the 1948 comedy about two journalists, who are ex-sweethearts, sent to cover a wedding.
