The Chernobyl disaster happened in the Soviet Union in 1986, but seven years before, a Soviet movie was released that speculated about a world contaminated by waste.
“Stalker” tells the story of a village destroyed by some sort of fallout. There is a special place in the village called The Zone, where people’s fondest wishes can be granted. But only “stalkers” have the ability to lead people into The Zone. The film follows one such stalker and the philosophical and psychological after-effects of his dangerous mission.
Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 film, in Russian with subtitles, got a 4K restoration last spring. It will be shown Sunday to Wednesday, Oct. 8 to 11, at 7:30 p.m. each day, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, at the theater at 300 Summit St. on the campus of Trinity College in Hartford.
