‘After The Storm’ Opens Japanese Film Series At Wadsworth Atheneum

The Wadsworth Atheneum’s new big exhibit “Utamaro and the Lure of Japan” is the inspiration for the spring film program, which will feature 14 Japanese films, opening with “After the Storm.”

Hirokazu Koreeda’s comic drama tells the story of a writer who has sat on his laurels and frittered away his money, and then wants to worm his way back into the lives of his family, his ex-wife and his son. It will be shown Jan. 26 at 7 p.m., and Jan. 28 and 29 at 2 p.m.

Other films in the Atheneum series are “Shall We Dance?” “Our Little Sister,” “Miss Hokusai,” “Pom Poko,” “Creepy,” “Sweet Bean,” “Utamaro and His Five Women,” “A Geisha,” “The Sea Is Watching,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Sisters of the Gion,” “The Life of Oharu” and “Tampopo.” An additional film, “Princess Mononoke,” will be shown Jan. 27 at 10 p.m. at Cinestudio, on the campus of Trinity College in Hartford.

Admission to most films is $9, $8 students and seniors, $7 members, free to Insider Access members and above. Admission to “Shall We Dance?” on Feb. 2 is free with admission to Art After Dark. Admission to the kid-friendly “Miss Hokusai” and “Pom Poko,” which will be accompanied by a shorts program, on Feb. 18 is free. “Tampopo” will be accompanied by a meal, for extra charge. “Princess Mononoke” is $10, $8 seniors and students. thewadsworth.org.
