Last year, Helen Mirren made a splash with her movie “Woman in Gold,” a fact-based drama about a woman who fought to recover her family heirloom, Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I,” after it had been looted by the Nazis.

On Thursday, Sept. 29, New Britain Museum of American Art will show a documentary that tells the true story behind that movie.

“Adele’s Wish” is about Maria Altmann, whose aunt posed for that portrait. It was stolen by Nazis in 1938. After the war, Altmann fought the Austrian government to get that painting back. The documentary outlines how some governments in Europe vigorously fight claims by people who want their Nazi-looted heirlooms back.

The movie is directed by Terrence Turner, who is married to the great-niece of Maria Altmann.

“Adele’s Wish” will be shown at 1 and 4 p.m. at the museum at 56 Lexington St. Admission to the film is free with museum admission. nbmaa.org.
