'Beginners' -- 2 1/2 stars

<b>R; 1:44 running time</b><br><br> "Beginners" begins at the end, with news that Hal, the retired LA museum curator played by Christopher Plummer, has died of cancer. Then we reverse and learn about his final, exuberantly happy years as a self-outed gay man. Better late than never. Just cute enough for some tastes, too cute by half for others, writer-director Mike Mills' film may well secure Plummer an overdue Academy Award come early 2012. About time! What crafty delight this lion brings to the screen, to all sorts of characters.
