A recent Your View by gun-rights activists Alan Gottlieb and Dave Workman accused Everytown for Gun Safety of cloaking its intentions "in a fabric of lies."
Every year about 31,000 Americans are killed by gun violence. But look to the scientific literature and try to find answers to basic questions regarding gun violence and you'll find few federally funded studies. You'll find a large number of federal studies on other public health issues of comparable magnitude, like traffic fatalities. Why is that?
In 2003, Congress passed the Tiahrt amendments at the behest of the National Rifle Association. Incredibly, one of those amendments prevents the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal agency that traces the flow of firearms, from disseminating its information to researchers. Likewise, the gun lobby is squashing the president's request for $10 million for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study causes and solutions to gun violence.
I challenge Gottlieb, Workman and the NRA: Join us in seeking data-driven solutions to America's gun violence problem. Call on Congress to repeal the Tiahrt amendments, and fund the needed research.
But don't hold your breath. They block this research for a reason. They can't handle the truth.
