Emmaus' Funk Brewing to open tasting room

Emmaus' Funk Brewing Company is wrapping up about five months of construction and hoping to open its tasting room in mid-April. Customers will be able to enjoy tours, as well as free samples of six of the brewery’s beers on tap. There also will be growler and bottle sales to go.

The brewery, which contains four fermentation tanks, brewed its first batch of craft beer in late January. Selections are available at Broadway Social in Bethlehem, Strange Brew Tavern in Allentown, Keystone Pub & Grille in Whitehall Township, Volpe’s Sports Bar in Emmaus and K’Town Pub and Grill in Kutztown, among others.

Co-owned by Kyle Funk of Macungie and his brother-in-law, Jon Norman, the business at 19 S. Sixth St. was born out of their mutual passion for craft beer.

“I had been home-brewing for six years prior to Funk and there is something special in creating a wonderful product and sharing it with people who can appreciate it,” said Funk, who labels the company’s India rye ale, Redolent, as his “go-to” beer.

Joe Percoco, a former brewer at Allentown Brew Works, Weyerbacher Brewing Co. in Easton and Barley Creek Brewing Co. in Tannersville, heads the brewing operations.

The lineup currently includes five beers: Redolent; Efflorescence, a saison brewed with hibiscus; Citrus, a grapefruit and blood orange IPA; Savage, a sour saison fermented with wild yeast and Funk’s own farmhouse yeast; and Crimson, a dry saison brewed with spelt, honey and aged on sour cherries. A Farmhouse IPA will be brewed starting in April.

According to Funk, the tasting room will have an "industrial look" and customers will feel fully immersed in the brewery's operations. Info:
