Rick and Diane Walker had a rare opportunity to see the quality of construction that goes into By Carrier homes long before they decided to purchase a new home at Samuel’s Crossing in Plainville.
The Walkers had raised three sons in their 1920s vintage Avon home and had well-established roots in the community that extended back five generations. When a family-owned parcel of land was slated for development, By Carrier began construction of a home next door to the Walker’s that enabled Rick and Diane to observe the building process first-hand from the ground up.
"I saw the high quality of construction and knew that I had to find a high-quality builder to reduce or eliminate the stress of building our new home," says Rick. Energy efficiency was also a top priority. After using his skills as a journalist to do further research, Rick came to the conclusion that, "By Carrier is the only builder that has been consistently focused on real, serious energy efficiency."
Today, the Walkers enjoy living in their three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath custom colonial home based on the Samuel’s Crossing New Englander model. Stepping up from their previous home that started out as a log cabin has not only been a quantum leap in energy efficiency, it is a lifestyle enhancement that Diane says starts with the flowing floor plan. "I just love the open floor plan concept. I always wanted to have an entertainment space that flows from the family room into the dining room and into the kitchen," she says. "It’s just beautiful. Now I can be with the entire family when I’m in the kitchen – and I’m always in the kitchen."
Diane says that she and Rick were both surprised at the abundance of storage space and adds, “I have more storage space than I can use.” Rick took advantage of a roomy walk-in closet on the second floor and turned it into a bonus room that now serves as his office and study. As the newest residents of Samuel’s Crossing, Diane says the building process and recent relocation were trouble-free. "We’ve only been here three weeks and we love it."
Samuel’s Crossing offers three- and four-bedroom designs with an option for a first-floor master suite. There are eight basic floor plans ranging in size from 1,900 to 2,700 square feet that should be considered starting points for designing a fully customized home. Wooded lots are available as are walk-out basements that connect indoor and outdoor spaces. Natural gas provides heat and hot water and every home comes with a gas fireplace. Two-zone heating is standard as are warm toned hardwood floors on the first floor. Custom crafted oak or birch cabinetry in a range of colors are included in the kitchen package as well as granite countertops and a center island or peninsula.
Susan Powers and her boyfriend Tom were looking for a right-sized home in the Farmington Valley area for about five months when their search took them to Samuel’s Crossing on a holiday weekend. Susan says it was a spur-of-the-moment decision that brought them to see a model home. "As soon as I walked in I thought, I have to live here," says Powers. Her professional eye for detail comes from working in the home construction business with her family for many years. "I knew what I was looking at. I recognized the quality. I saw it. I felt it. They are top-end builders," she says of By Carrier.
After a walk around the neigborhood, Powers decided to buy a home. She and Tom bought the model home that they have now owned for a year. In that time, Susan says, there has been “absolutely nothing to complain about, not even a nail pop.” The only surprise the couple had was a pleasant one: the highest monthly natural gas bill was only $135.
The open layout connecting the kitchen, dining and living areas and the generous amount of storage space offered by the home are among the features that Powers and her boyfriend appreciate. "For the 2,000 square feet that we have it doesn’t feel small. It feels bigger than it is," says Powers.
Powers notes that the location of Samuel’s Crossing in Plainville near the Farmington town line with its close proximity to I-84, Route 9 and other state roads makes for easy access to shopping and services. She says that she feels like "we’re in the center of everything."
