Each year, about 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the United States. A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, occasionally including the cervix, ovaries or fallopian tubes. 3.1 million women are estimated to have had hysterectomies between 2000 and 2004 according to the Centers for Disease Control. Hysterectomies are often performed due to complications such as fibroid tumors, uterine prolapse or endometriosis.
