It was like that scene in “Home Alone” when they’re running
through the airport, except we were trying to catch a ferry!
I bought the tickets weeks in advance to guarantee a good
departure/arrival time for the holiday weekend.
It was going to be our first trip to Block Island as a family. It’s been nearly four years since my husband and I have been because we’ve been having babies for the last 3 years. I wasn’t interested in going during my third trimester. I LOVE the beach and going for long walks, however, neither were enjoyable when I was very pregnant so we just waited.
This was the perfect opportunity to venture back. My sister invited my family, my other sister and brother, along with their significant others out for a few days. And bonus, we were staying at a house so it would be easier for meals and naps. But, as any parent knows, there’s always going to be some bumps in the road you didn’t plan for, and I should know that by now!
I felt like we were at the pediatricians office every other
day beforehand. When it was all said and done, both of my girls ended up with a prescription for antibiotics. Better to find out now, than while we’re gone.
Then there’s the packing. I made a list, that kept getting modified. I pack for the girls and myself. It took me a week. I did a little every day, but then there would be a trip to the store because I forgot something or another load of laundry because I needed something. Did I mention this was only for 3 days?
One more call to the doctor before we left, but I was
assured, all is well. We left a half an hour earlier than we technically needed to (rushing makes me anxious so my husband appeases me by agreeing to leave earlier). But, we hit beach traffic anyway. I’m irritated. Type A mama in the passenger seat getting antsy, “ugh, how much longer?” I say to my husband, “Are we going to make the ferry?” I ask my husband. “GPS says we’ll be there in time”, I look up the next departure time because there's no way around this mess! Meantime, my daughters are getting antsy, time to sing songs!
We call my in laws. They were kind enough to watch the dog for the weekend and are meeting us there for the drop off. “We’re running late” we said, "but we’ll call you when we park." We finally pull into the parking lot with a few minutes to spare and the attendant comes over and says, “we’re full.” At this point, my laid back husband had even had it, “a sign would have helped” he said. Awesome. Next parking lot, “valet only” they tell us, "whatever" I say, "give him the keys, let’s run!"
I wish I had time for a picture. We jumped out of the car, not saying a word and worked as a team. We put the girls in the double stroller and unpacked the car. My husband had to wait to drop off the key and pay so I tried to take as much as I could. Here I was pushing a double stroller with a backpack and my purse on my back, a beach umbrella tucked under my arm and dragging a suitcase behind me. It wasn’t pretty. And that was only half of the stuff. I raced to the ferry muttering some choice words under my breath every time the suitcase tipped over or I dropped something. I’m sure it was good entertainment for passersby. I get halfway there and realize I don’t have the cooler with the girls medicine so I stop to call my husband and realize he called three times. Didn’t hear the phone in the chaos. His wallet was in my purse and he needed to pay for parking. I spotted my father in law and pointed him in the right direction.
He paid for the parking and grabbed the dog. Thank God for family. My mother in law and my niece were waiting at the ferry with cookies. Hugs, kisses, quick goodbyes and thank yous. WE MADE IT! Phew!! I’m pretty sure the world wouldn’t have ended if we didn’t make that ferry, but it felt like it would at the time. Good practice for our week long vacation in the future!
