Torture by Testing

Everything changes this year, as you’ve probably heard. But even after attending my children’s curriculum nights, I’m still confused about the Common Core Standards. Actually, I’m even more confused. Lots of catch phrases were tossed around, and plenty of attention was given to testing. After a particularly long presentation, we weary parents, whose butts were numb from sitting for so long, were asked if we had any questions. (Please, nobody ask any questions. Please.)

We were all apparently so tired and confused that we didn’t even know where to begin. The sole question one parent could come up with was whether the SATs are now computerized. This was a presentation to a group of sixth graders.

We parents complain about the ridiculous amount of testing that our kids endure in public school. But it must be heartbreaking for an engaged and committed teacher to be the one administering tests to an otherwise excited class.
