Recent Rentals: What To Watch, What To Skip

Summer is here and we've been spending long days at the beach, pool or museum.  All the activity makes Family Movie Night even more relaxing...as we collapse in an exhausted snuggle.  Recently, we've ordered two new releases...one was a big hit, the other a big flop.  Here are our thoughts:

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a lot of fun.  This follow-up to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine and Vanessa Hudgens.  This film isn't going to win any Academy Awards and won't make you look at life differently...but, it makes for an entertaining two hours.  We all got swept away by the special effects: the little elephants, the giant bugs...and The Rock was pretty funny.  All in all, this is a solid family film.

But, we were disappointed in We Bought A Zoo, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.  This was my choice...and, frankly, I wish we never watched it.  For a family movie, it is so, so sad...the sad scenes just keep on comin'.  Too heavy, really.  Additionally, there's a lot of bad language and a negative reference to the Easter Bunny.  Yikes.  Damon, as always, is a really capable, likeable actor and, to be fair, this is not a horrible movie.  Perhaps my kids, at 6 and 8, were just way too young to watch it.  It is definitely more suitable for families with older kids.
