As I grabbed my keys and ran out the door to drive my youngest dude to school today, there must have been a touch of irritation in my voice when I said “OK, let’s go.” (The bus driver decided to show up early, which we didn’t notice, and so we waited outside making snowballs for 15 minutes until we finally gave up and got in the car.)

“It’s not going to mess up your day to have to drive me in, is it?” he asked, with an Oliver Twist tone.

No, it’s not going to mess up my day. Not at all. We got to drive down the crazy, curvy road near our house, which the little dude always enjoys. Today was not an exception.

The snow-covered trees and the the view of the valley below didn’t go unnoticed by either of us. I drove super-slow, since it was slippery and since we recently saw a mama bear and her cubs crossing this very street. How could a beautiful morning drive with my boy mess up my day, really?

When we hear what the people of New York and New Jersey are going through just to make it to school, just to make it through another day, it sure makes complaining about missing the bus or socks left on the floor seem ridiculous.

Surely I’m not the only one who has felt gratitude for a non-flooded home, running water and electricity over the past week-and-a-half. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all be grateful all the time for what we have?

Nope, no complaints here. Just counting my blessings, and sending good thoughts to our neighbors to the south.
