A new book called "Swagger: 10 Urgent Rules for Raising Boys in an Era of Failing Schools, Mass Joblessness, and Thug Culture" by Lisa Bloom is getting a lot of attention on many mom blogs this week.
Written by attorney, TV legal analyst and author, Lisa Bloom, this book asserts that our culture is pushing our sons to be arrogant and over-confident while downplaying the importance of reading and a college education.
As a mom of two boys, I found this video on Yahoo Shine to be an interesting watch. Bloom believes many boys are taught that "reading is girly" but, in actuality, we parents should "make our homes a reading mecca."
Gosh, we love to read...and it is such a wonderful bonding experience for us. We just finished reading the entire Harry Potter series out loud and had so many fulfilling, exciting conversations based upon the incredible tales that we soaked up together. Today is the last day of school...and I'm actually planning to take Ben right to the library to see if we can find more books starring his new favorite characters: SkippyJon Jones and Stillwater, the panda.
Do you put a big priority on reading?
Will you check out "Swagger"?
