As the mom of two sons - 24 months apart - I had many moments when I wondered:
Should they share a room?
The decision was easy at first, thanks to my middle-of-the-night-screamer. Ben was opposed to sleeping for two long years...so, I knew that big bro needed his peaceful beauty rest on the other side of the wall.
So, the boys got used to two separate rooms. And, honestly, as time went on, the diffferences in their personalities became quite apparent: Sam, a calm, studious guy, is a meticulous collector who likes his things "just so". In fact, one time, he went around his room, displaying all of his special items in special spots, declaring it "Sam's Museum". Ben, on the other hand, isn't quite so neat...he likes his beloved stuffed animal buddies in a wonderfully explosive disarray...and navigating his floor means dodging around a varierty of Legos. He's also a talker...a big jokester...constantly laughing, poking, jumping...you get the picture.
Frankly, I ended up thinking that my little guy could potentially drive my older son crazy if they shared a small space. Don't get me wrong: the are the best of friends and get along great. But, could sharing a room be too much of a good thing? And end up going terribly wrong? I thought so...sometimes personal space is very restorative.
But, this morning I read this article on Shine from Yahoo...and started thinking about all the little giggles, brotherly secrets and bed time traditions they could enjoy together if they shared a room....and I wondered if we made the right choice.
I think, for us, we did. Now that they're older, maybe they can have Friday night sleep-overs in each other's rooms...that would be a nice compromise.
What do you think? Do your kids share a room?
