Recently, I worked with the Connecticut Hospice in Branford to put together this article and this video about the benefits of art therapy during a child's grieving process. It was a moving segment which touched many readers and viewers.
Now, I'm learning that a national event -- Children's Grief Awareness Day -- is coming up on Thursday November 15th. This event is meant to help a kid feel less alone in his traumatic time of need....and to enable the rest of us to become more aware about what grieving kids are going through. Statistics show that 1 out of every 20 children will experience the death of a parent before they graduate from high school. Also, think about all of the youngsters who suffer through the death of a sibling, grandparent or close relative.
I received this information from the Outreach Coordinator at Mary's Place in Windsor, a non-profit organization that provides grief support groups for small children, teens and young widows/widowers who have lost a significant person in their lives. Amazingly, all of the programs are free.

Children's Grief Awareness Day always occurs in the holiday season...to remind us that this usually joyous time of year is incredibly difficult for kids who are desperately missing a loved one.
Wearing blue on November 15th will show support for these children...and spread their important message.
