Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?

Although this piece in today’s Huffington Post is about how everybody blames teachers for everything that’s wrong with our schools, the part that lazy bloggers like me will highlight is the series of math problems at the bottom.

My own fifth grader regularly bangs his head on the kitchen table while doing math homework. I am of no help at all, since my verbal score was about twice my math score on the SATs. His older brothers understand math in a way that only kids presently in school can understand, so they are his tutors. But even I know that the skills he's learning now are what I had learned years later in middle school.

What’s expected of young students, particularly in math, is what’s also expected of our teachers. It’s kind of crazy.

And despite the fact that they're learning this advanced math, many of them don't know their multiplication facts. Or at least my kids don't. There's no time for that, apparently.

Give those math problems a shot, and let us know how you did.
