Business Traveler Creates New Line Of TSA-Friendly Toiletries

Call it a travel buzz kill. You arrive at your destination and find that the bottles of toiletries in your suitcase have leaked all over your wardrobe.

It's an experience Kevin Garrity is all too familiar with. The Connecticut road warrior has racked up more than four million business travel flying miles over the course of his career — and plenty of wardrobe emergencies as well.

"I've arrived for meetings, found that my shaving cream dripped out and had to scramble to replace shirts or pants," says Garrity. "I always felt like there should be a more efficient way to pack personal care items, but just couldn't find the right size or shape or product."

In Garrity's family, when you can't find the product you need, you invent it.

His dad, Paul, pioneered the Garrity Dispoz-a-Lite, one of the first disposable cigarette lighters, and then developed Life-Lite, an early disposable flashlight.

After Duracell bought the family business in 2006, Kevin took a few years to search for yet another innovative consumer product and kept coming back to the challenges of travel in the post-9-11 world.

"It wasn't packing shoes or clothes, it was personal travel essentials," says Garrity. "Do you have enough or too much? Will the bottles break or leak? What does the 3-1-1 rule for carry-on luggage actually mean?"

The 3-1-1 Rule refers to the Transportation Security Administration's regulations for how much liquid air travelers can pack in carry-on bags. To be carried on board, containers of liquids, gels or aerosols can't be larger than 3.4 ounces, (3) and all containers must fit into a single (1), one-quart (1), clear, Ziploc-style plastic bag.

After much trial and error, his solution was the Squeeze Pod — TSA compliant, compact, single-use packages of moisturizer, shave cream, hand purifier, hair gel and toilet odor eliminator.

The toiletries are made with natural ingredients. Users count out the number they need, toss them into their suitcase and hit the road. At their destination, they use them up and toss them out. No dragging home sticky, half-empty containers.

Garrity road tested them all, including the toilet odor eliminator.

"Call me the 'podfather,'" jokes Garrity.

After three-and-a-half years in development, the USA-made line launched earlier this month at the company's website: www.SqueezePod.com. Three single-use pods are $2.50; 15 single-use pods are $11.25. New customers can get a free Variety Pack with 15 single-use pods, (three of each product), by paying a $6 shipping and handling fee.

Garrity says plans call for additions to the line, including larger pods containing shampoo, conditioner and body wash.

"Pack light, travel easy," says Garrity. "That's the goal."
