How to make your next trip the most rewarding (in credit-card points), with the least risk (check the insurance) and the fewest hidden fees (at hotels and resorts).

The best returns from flight and hotel rewards credit cards, according to a new survey by NextAdvisor.com:

1. Barclaycard Arrival Plus

Return: $2.20 per $100 spent.

Bonus: 40,000 miles after spending $1,000 in the first three months, equal to $400 available to spend on travel.

Comment: If points are used to pay for travel, cardholders earn an additional 10 percent in points. Bonus miles can be redeemed for statement credit.

2. Starwood Preferred GuestCredit Card (American Express)

Return: $2.11 per $100 spent.

Bonus: 10,000 points with first purchase, 20,000 points after spending $5,000 in the first six months.

Comment: Offers $2.82 hotel point value per $100 spent, the highest in the NextAdvisor survey.

3. Capital One Venture Rewards

Return: $2 per $100 spent.
