"With the right websites and apps, this summer¿s vacation planning can be a cinch," says Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart magazine, a Consumer Reports publication. "These tools can help you do everything from plan the perfect road-trip filled with attractions to nab a deal on a hotel room at the last minute."

ShopSmart's June issue recommends several apps to download before you hit the road -- including AAA's free TripTik Mobile (you don't have to be a member of the travel club to use it), which provides latest gas prices, maps, directions and information on local hotel, restaurants and attractions.
