The Washington County Office of Community Grant Management and members of Washington County’s Local Management Board hosted Anne Sheridan, executive director of the Governor’s Office for Children, during a tour of Local Management Board-sponsored programs for children and families on Aug. 26.
As part of the visit, Sheridan toured the Washington County Family Center and the Sunshine Center.
In fiscal year 2013, the Family Center provided services to 116 adults and 105 children in education, parenting and child development. The Sunshine Center served 50 parents, 67 children and 42 families dealing with child abuse and neglect situations.
The board was instrumental in providing financial assistance for the relocation of the Family Center from 920 W. Washington St. to 221 McRand Court in Hagerstown.
Vicki Sadehvandi, director of Citizens Assisting and Sheltering the Abused, or CASA, hosted a visit at the local shelter for domestic violence victims.
Other tour stops included an after-school program provided by the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County and the Town of Williamsport and ended with Child Advocacy Center, Safe Place. Safe Place provides services for sexual and physical abuse victims with help from a multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals, social workers and law enforcement personnel.
County Commissioners John Barr, Jeff Cline, William McKinley and Ruth Anne Callaham also met with Sheridan, who delivered her appreciation for the collaborative efforts making a substantial difference for families and children.
The commissioners expressed the importance of the annual grant funding received from the Office for Children and thanked her for valuing local efforts to address community needs.
“We are pleased to have the Governor’s Office for Children see how our Local Management Board has coordinated agencies and services as a comprehensive safety net for our children and families,” said James Hovis, director of the Washington County Office of Community Grant Management.
Along with Hovis, Sheridan was accompanied by Melissa Nearchos, senior grant manager, Office of Community Grant Management; Peter Thomas, Local Management Board chairman; Karen Christof, assistant director of adult, child and family services, Washington County Department of Social Services; and David A. Engle, Social Services director.
