Lexus has been trying to shave a performance edge into its staid upscale profile since 2007, when it launched the F line of performance cars. The IS F supersedan turned heads, but the advent in 2010 of the LFA, a supercar with a 4.8-liter V-10 engine that hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, proved Lexus was committed to a sporty future. But the LFA started at $375,000 so no one bought it, no one saw it, and few knew—or cared—how Lexus was evolving.

Subaru officially dropped Impreza from the WRX name for 2015, and aside from losing the hatchback, the rally-inspired all-wheel-drive compact sedan with the wide body and the distinctive hood scoop remains the best total package for space and sport under $30,000.

When Toyota and Subaru partnered on producing an affordable rear-wheel drive sports coupe, enthusiasts were excited. Take Toyota’s youthful design elements featured in the Scion and pair it with Subaru’s flat-four cylinder Boxer engine and you get an entry-level sports coupe that may attract younger buyers to brands typically favored by their parents.

Introduced in 2006, the Porsche Cayman has filled a void between the entry-level Boxster convertible and the brand-defining 911 performance car. Model year 2014 is the Cayman’s first full redesign and though they still share the same architecture, a Cayman cannot be called a Boxster with an overpriced roof.
