In a now-iconic scene, Chaplin's lonely prospector is throwing a New Year's Eve party. Unfortunately, it's getting late and his guests (a saloon girl he's fallen in love with and her friends) haven't shown up. The prospector begins to fantasize about the party he should be having and imagines the ladies coming to visit and having a grand old time. It's during this sequence that Chaplin performs the dinner roll routine in a scene that is comic but also a little heartbreaking when you remember that the prospector is doing this just to entertain his lonely self.
