A wrenching film about the Holocaust would no doubt have lost some of its power if it was depicted in more buoyant color, so Steven Spielberg made sure the story of a Gentile who saved Jews was seen accordingly. The motion picture academy felt the same way and awarded the film best picture, the first time in 33 years ("The Apartment") that a film in that style had won Oscars' top prize.
