The Portrait Gallery in the Second Bank of the United States, Philadelphia

You can sprint up and down the "Rocky" staircase at the Philadelphia Museum of Art or visit the Barnes Foundation in its newish Center City location, but instead choose the Portrait Gallery in the Second Bank of the United States for a combo lesson in art and American history. It's in Independence National Historical Park, so you can visit it along with the Liberty Bell and other historic sites. The Portrait Gallery's "People of Independence" exhibition features 185 paintings of Colonial and federal leaders, including signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, military officers, explorers and scientists.
