There are moments in nature that are so fleeting that few are privileged to witness them. Jeff Smith of San Pedro had one such sighting in January when he watched the mating dance of mandarin fish on Rainbow Reef off the coast of Yap in Micronesia. “When they mate, it’s less than four seconds,” the dive shop owner said. After 20 years of shooting with film, Smith recently switched to digital. For this shot, he used a Sea & Sea Dx-5000g Digital Cam with two digital strobes to capture a reminder that life flourishes far from our field of vision.
