In an effort to block the oil slick, a load of fill is dumped at the entrance to Ventura Keys Channel. At the time, the spill was the worst in the nation's history and would remain so until the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska's Prince William Sound that leaked 11 million gallons of crude oil.
